RDSEA Supports Brazil’s First Buoy Deployment in the Atlantic

RDSEA supports and assists AMBIDADOS and the Oceanographic Institute, Univ. of Sao Paulo (IOUSP), in the deployment of Brazil’s first “home-grown” buoy system (ATLAS-B) in the Atlantic.  With a fiberglass toroid donated by NOAA-PMEL (Seattle, WA) and systems integration by AMBIDADOS, a successful deployment was conducted from R/V ALPHA CRUSIS (formerly MOANA WAVE of UH in the Pacific).  RDSEA President Rick Cole was on board the AC to oversee the deployment and to make the inductive connection between the 10 subsurface sensors (SBE MicroCats) mounted on the mooring line and the buoy controller.  Averaged data are transmitted daily back to IOUSP laboratories for post processing and dissemination.  A 100% data stream was achieved with data now flowing from the 28ºS - 42ºW region of the western Atlantic.  Full meteorology is also incorporated into the data stream.  These data will enhance the ongoing PIRATA Program and other ocean and climate research being conducted in the Southeastern Brazilian Bight region.  Please see “Gallery” for full pictorial, also see the video of the ATLAS-B deployment.
